Growth Mindset

Every student I meet is an individual. As human beings, we’re each built differently, and we understand concepts from different perspectives. While we’re all working toward similar goals in Sternick Studios, namely, comfortable posture and serviceable violin technique so that we may create music, there are multiple ways of achieving our goals. I don’t have one prescribed way for teaching. I draw upon multiple schools of thought, methods, exercises, and practice techniques, depending on my student’s individual needs.

We will learn to read music. We will learn to count and subdivide. We will sing, because if you can sing it, then you can play it. We will clap, because if you can clap it, then you can play it. We will learn elements of music theory, including how to build scales and arpeggios. We will learn to tune our violin and the basics of instrument and bow care. We will listen carefully, training our ears. We will learn to problem-solve by breaking down passages and isolating one hand at a time. We will learn to create music by identifying which of our tools to use and when. Most importantly, we will learn from our mistakes, no matter your age or skill level.
